SNMP Assured Delivery

EasySpooler supports SNMP assured delivery. You may want to use SNMP assured delivery if you have a direct network printer that is frequently unavailable. The printer must support the MIB (management information base) with SNMP.

The printer may receive many pages of data into its buffer as it begins processing and printing these pages at the speed determined by its mechanism. As the printer prints the pages, it increments the impression count

SNMP enables you to specify how far ahead the printer is allowed to buffer data. EasySpooler tracks the last page printed. The fewer pages you have in the buffer, the more accurate the tracking. However, buffering too little data may cause pauses between pages since the printer must wait for more data.

The benefit of this procedure is that EasySpooler can track the last page printed more accurately. In the example above, it will be, at most, five pages ahead. The fewer pages you have in the buffer, the more accurate the tracking.

On the other hand, buffering too little data may cause pauses between pages since the printer must wait for more data. Thus, the greater the accuracy of the page counting, the greater the risk of printer performance degradation, while the more pages you have in the buffer, the less accurate the tracking.

Additionally, you can have the printer buffer one number of pages during the document’s printing and a different number at the end of the job. In this way you can allow EasySpooler ’s page count to get ahead during the run, but then wait for the printer to catch up at the end to better ensure that all pages have been printed before going on to the next document.

For example, you could allow three pages to be buffered during the run, but no pages at the end. Such settings would avoid pauses during printing and make sure that all pages were printed before going on to the next document.

By default, SNMP assured delivery is disabled in EasySpooler. You can enable it through the Web UI when you add a direct network printer or later, by going to the printer’s destination settings.

To add/change the SNMP settings:

  1. Take the appropriate action:

If you...

Then...

you are in the middle of the procedure for adding a direct network printer

Go to step 4

you have already added the printer as a Direct TCP/IP printer and want to change the SNMP settings

Go to step 2

  1. Click Destinations in the main menu and select Destination list from the menu options. The Destinations list window opens..

  2. Find the appropriate printer, left click and select Change from the pop-up menu. The Change Destination window for that printer opens. For information on finding a printer on the Destinations list window, see  Search for a Destination.

  3. Change any of the SNMP settings. Refer to the table that follows for information on each field in the SNMP section. To change other settings for the destination, see Change Destination Settings.

SNMP assured delivery

Leave unchecked to disable or checked to enable SNMP queries to the printer during printing.

not checked

Buffered pages

Number of pages that the printer is allowed to buffer while a document is printing.

NOTE: If set low, reduces the memory demand on the printer and shortens the time required to resend data if problems occur, but may cause pauses during printing.

3

Buffered pages at EOJ

Number of pages that the printer is allowed to buffer at the end of the job (EOJ) before proceeding to the next document.

3

Wait time

If printing stops, the number of seconds to wait before querying the printer and resending data.

NOTE: At the end of each wait time interval, EasySpooler checks the helptime setting and then the detachtime setting in the global tuning parameters. If neither of these settings is exceeded and printing is still stalled, the next wait time interval begins.

2

Reverse status bits (SR80)

If the printer is an IBM SR80, check the box to indicate that this printer reverses status bits. Otherwise, leave it unchecked
